Smaller bites

Reactor Blocks was a project that was released alongside Reactor 6.
The idea of blocks was to replicate the workflow of your modular inside Reaktor. Over the years Reaktor projects had become very ambitious and pushing the limits of what may be considered reasonable within a no-code environment.
Blocks was an opportunity to define a “soft” standard, and see if the community would bite into it.

One early question i had to solve for the design was the consistency. The resulting direction could be outlined as:

  • consistent UX all across the collection: one form factor with gridded width, systematic approach to modulation workflows and knob sizes.
  • Branded “lines” to give patches the fun diversity you get in a eurorack or pedal board context where different brands and styles clash with one another.
  • design until “floor -2”: it was important for me that the user also finds a clean house when looking under the hood for the first time in order to smooth out the onboarding and make the first steps into building more inviting. Every component therefore had icons and rather clean and systematic wiring for the first two levels of depth in the editor.
